The inaugural Rugby World Cup was an invitation-only global celebration which saw 16 nations assemble in Australia and New Zealand during May, 1987.

England qualified as pool runners-up behind Australia, losing to the Wallabies in Sydney but encountering few problems against Japan and the USA.

Wales topped pool two above Ireland, while Scotland held France 20-20 and despatched Zimbabwe and Romania through impressive half-centuries.
