TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwanese voters, in a stinging rebuke of Beijing yesterday, elected pro-independence candidate and former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian aspresident.
He immediately offered to meet Chinese leaders either on the mainland or in Taiwan in a fresh bid for peace.
Mr. Chen, the candidate singled out by Beijing in a series of warlike threats throughout the campaign, won a tight three-way race with 39 percent of the vote, ousting the Nationalist Party that has ruled Taiwan for over 50 years.
