Prime Minister Tony Blair has said his priorities are "education, education, education" and recent reports show poor standards of reading in children.
So why has Glasgow City Council closed five city libraries, reduced opening hours and altered staff shift patterns?
Libraries are not only the main source of reading material for young and old alike, but are also meeting places and a source of information. Library services should be being expanded, not reduced. - Kay Allan, Strathclyde co- ordinator, Scottish Green Party.
