Women worry more than men because they are more aware of their surroundings, according to new medical research.

Too much fretting can strain women's health and lead to poor memory as the increase in the hormone cortisol erodes an area of the brain known as the hippocampus.

Dr Edward Hallowell, of Harvard Medical School ,said: "A confident risk- taker can change to a guarded, melancholy person over a few months because of constant brooding."

He claims chronic worry usually stems from a sense of vulnerability and a diminished sense of power.
