If the legendary James Brown was the godfather of soul, then Kool Herc was the godfather of hip hop, creating the backbone to a music whose global influence has been profound. Unfortunately few people have heard of him but that's about to change as the gargantuan Herc is here in Britain for a DJ exhibition.
"The hip hop kids out there are historians," he says, "And there's people out there like my friend Afrika Bambaataa who, when asked that million dollar question, 'Who started hip hop?', answers 'Kool Herc'."
