CHICAGO -- Acute appendicitis can be ruled out if an ultrasound reveals that the appendix is ovoid shaped over its entire length, an Austrian researcher determined in a study of 382 patients.
The appendix on ultrasound can appear as various shapes when a graded compression technique is used, explained Dr. Thomas Rettenbacher of Hospital Barmhertige Brueder in Salzburg.
Among 100 control patients in his study, 37 appendixes were ovoid, 33 were round, and 30 were partly ovoid and partly round.
Patients with right lower quadrant pain who did not have acute appendicitis had a similar pattern.
