THE TWO countries with the greatest number of islands in Europe are Greece and Scotland, in that order.
So perhaps it's fitting that one of the tallest hills in Oban - Argyll's gateway to the isles - is majestically crowned with a Greek-style colosseum or amphitheatre.
Appearances can be deceptive of course, and closer inspection reveals McCaig's Tower has nothing to do with the Greeks at all.
Instead, it is a grandiose late 19th century monument named after a benefactor of the port, who had it built as a memorial to himself, and also as a novel ...
