MYSTIC, Conn. _ A voyage of remembrance and reconciliation gets under way here Saturday (March 25) when a replica of the 19th-century schooner Amistad is lowered into the Mystic River at this historic old seaport.
As a black American, captaining this handsome sailing ship during its initial cruises along the Atlantic seaboard this summer will fill me with a combination of pleasure and pride _ and, more profoundly, a sense of poignancy.
I'm sure those same emotions will be felt by everyone who glimpses the Amistad slicing its way through the open sea or, for that matter, who happens to step on deck for an educational tour at its various ports of call.
