Demand for fatty acids in the US is forecast to increase 3.4 percent per annum to three billion pounds, valued at $1.6 billion, in the year 2002. Growth will be driven by the increasing use of fatty acids and their derivatives as ingredients in environmentally improved versions of lubricants, paints and detergents. Continued consumer demand for natural ingredients in food, cosmetics and toiletries will further support gains. Limiting growth will be competition from petrochemicals in the manufacture of detergent alcohols, surfactants and other large volume derivatives.
