Article: Books: Interview Jim Crace - The rites and wrongs of making up stories; Jason Beattie talks to Birmingham novelist Jim Crace.(News)

The Birmingham-based novelist Jim Crace watched the eclipse on the Scilly Isle of St Martin's. Most of the sun-spotters took to the highest point on the island to watch the solar event but Crace and his family decided a better view could be had from the beach.

Unfortunately, he didn't see much and was subjected to taunts from those who had taken the high ground, visually and morally.

"Ah, but on the beach you could see the crabs scuttling to find cover from the darkness," he told one local, inventing the scene partly to save face and partly out of mischief.
