Perhaps it was the heat. The high 70s are not typical conditions for British rugby and some of the imperfections of this opening Premiership Two match at The Reddings were caused by too many barbecued brain cells. Plus the numbing inadequacies of Moseley's opponents.
John White pointed out afterwards that it is a long time since Moseley opened their campaign with a win. True. It is also a long time since Moseley had meat as easy as this to devour. There were diehard West Hartlepool supporters in the grandstand who genuinely did not know who they were watching.
