Washing billowed in the wind and lamb was roasting over an open fire at a gipsy camp in West Bromwich yesterday.

But the gipsies were feeling far from nostalgic. They were angry that Home Secretary Mr Jack Straw had done their kind a grave disservice.

A forthright Mr Straw said during an interview on BBC Radio WM that many so-called travellers masqueraded as gipsies and traded on sentiment while committing crime and behaving anti-socially.
