Jordan is preparing for an influx of British visitors next year to the site where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.

Archaeologists and excavation teams are at work preparing the site on the east bank of the Jordan River.

Work is also under way to restore nearby Bethany where John lived and baptised early Christians.

Jordan tourist officials are hoping that the Pope will go to the baptismal site during a visit he is making to the country.
