The Aga was the first thing to go when Mark and Jacquey Humphries moved into their converted barn 13 years ago. Next went the coloured floral tiles and then most of the walls and some ceilings.
"We live in the 21st century but people insist on going back to the 18th. They pretend they live in little old cottages when we're supposed to be moving on."
The wife of architect Mark Humphries, who brought loft-living to Birmingham, believes it's something typically British. "We just hang onto the past."
