The Great Survivor has decided enough is enough.
Sir Norman Fowler has always known when it is time to quit but in the past his resignations have only been temporary.
He coined a new political catchphrase when he stepped down as Employment Secretary from Lady Thatcher's Government in 1990, famously saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
But two year later he returned as Conservative Party chairman, only to resign in 1994 after 24 months of taking all the flak for a disastrous period in the Tories' fortunes.
