In the Ottoman Empire's dying days, imperial guards in fezzes stood watch at the imposing factory gates, staring out across the waters of Istanbul's Golden Horn.
The guards, still wearing the brimless red headgear with a black tassel, now wield metal detectors rather than rifles. With the empire's industry long rusted away, the gatekeepers have turned their attention to welcoming tourists.
