In 1777 James Healey wrote of a certain garden in the West Midlands: "Here, methinks, if anywhere, among such tranquil bowers, where peace and pleasure seem to dwell, the villain would be disarmed from executing his dark and bloody purposes; and every passion that corrodes the human breast be lulled into a perfect calm."
A garden that could disarm the criminal! Methinks that it would now need to be fitted with security lights and barbed wire to be so effective. But these were different days.
