Close your eyes, sit back, and pretend you are at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Performing is the great Enrico Caruso, accompanied by a modern orchestra. Some purists balk at Caruso 2000 (RCA, $17), which uses a computer to meld early-1900s recordings with today's Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. But rarely has Caruso's dramatic tenor sounded richer or more focused on record. With a full-bodied stereo orchestra subbing for the thin sound of the original backing, the new CD comes as close as may be possible to a night at the opera with the singing son of Naples.
