Charity starts at home - but the explosion of charity shops is being viewed by the retail trade as unfair competition.

In some towns, businesses have been forced into liquidation because the High Street abounds with charity shops, causing a local retail depression.

Fifteen to 20 years ago, a small number of charity shops were to be found in every major town. Their inconspicuous presence had little impact upon the local economy while providing a focus for fund-raising for underdeveloped countries.
