As Birmingham Share Aware week kicks off, there can be few people in the Midlands who have not heard of the London Stock Exchange, especially among the millions in the region who own shares listed on it.
But far fewer people know how it works - or appreciate how important a place it occupies in the global financial system.
And hardly anyone realises that it started off hundreds of years ago as a lot of rowdy people buying and selling bits of paper in a coffee house.
