The Government yesterday scrapped plans to charge food firms pounds 90 for setting up a new food safety watchdog, in the face of widespread anger from farmers and retailers.

The levy to fund the new Food Standards Agency provoked outrage among small shopkeepers when they learned they would have to pay the same as massive supermarkets.
