To hear husky, accented Dietrich singing "Falling in love again, what am I to do" is to recall a bygone age of star quality and glamour. Born in Berlin, she shot to fame with The Blue Angel in 1930. Other movie hits included Destry Rides Again and Shanghai Express.
There was an air of mystery about her on screen and this aura carried through to her personal life. Her bit for the war effort included more than 500 appearances at concerts for allied troops from 1943-46.
