Plaid Cymru wrecked Labour's hopes of overall control of the new Welsh Assembly after a sensational rise in nationalist support.

Labour votes disappeared in its traditional Valleys heartland, with just 46 per cent of Wales's 2.2 million voters taking part in the historic first elections to the devolved body.

Public apathy was even higher than in the 1997 referendum when the turnout was 50.3 per cent.

Newly-elected Assembly members admitted they now faced a tough challenge to convince the Welsh people of the benefits of devolution.
