Warwickshire had much the better of an excruciatingly slow day at Chelmsford, thanks to a persevering attack led by Ed Giddins and superbly supported by Tim Munton.
They shared seven wickets to give their side a lead of 80 - an advantage which was slightly reduced by the loss of Nick Knight and nightwatchman Munton to Mark Ilott in the last 20 minutes.
Giddins and Munton nagged away at an Essex batting line-up that is painfully short of confidence after managing only 16 batting points last year. They concentrated only upon occupation of the crease on a pitch ...
