Memories of HUAC
The fortieth anniversary of the opening of House Un-American Activities Committee hearings on "alleged Communist infiltration' of the motion picture industry occurred recently. On October 19, to be exact. It is not a date I celebrate, but I'll never forget it; my father, Bartley C. Crum, was one of the lawyers for the "Unfriendly 19,' and as a result his life-- and the life of our family--was irrevocably changed.
The Unfriendly 19 were screenwriters, directors and producers such as Waldo Salt, Dalton Trumbo, John Howard Lawson, Ring Lardner Jr., Bertolt Brecht, Edward Dmytryk, Robert Rossen, Howard Koch and Adrian Scott. They had been ...
