A beggar was plodding along a road one day when he saw a farmhouse. He approached the door, tapped, and waited for someone to respond.
"What do you want?" inquired the housewife.
"I'm sorry to trouble you," began the beggar, "but I haven't eaten in two days!"
"I don't give food to beggars," replied the housewife. "If you want to work to earn a meal, I might find a job for you."
"No, no, you don't understand," cried the beggar. From the pocket of his rumpled jacket, he pulled out an ordinary stone and held it up for the woman to see.
