WHEN Richard Branson failed in his round-the-world ballooning attempt last week, it wasn't due to lack of sleep.

Because to help him rest in the cramped, noisy capsule, he used a slumber machine.

The device he used sends the user into a trance-like state, can reduce pain and induces sleep within ten minutes.

The machine, which is being used by the US Army and US Navy was invented by 26-year-old Richard Hanbury from London.

He introduced it to Branson as a means of improving the sleeping patterns of his Virgin Atlantic air crews.
