TOP TV scriptwriter Johnny Speight - the creator of comic legend Alf Garnett - lost his battle against cancer yesterday.
The former factory worker and lifelong socialist died, aged 78, at home with his family beside him.
He had suffered for two months from cancer of the pancreas, although friends say he had been ill for some time.
Last night senior BBC executives led the tributes that poured in for Johnny, who also penned ITV's drama The 19th Hole.
BBC entertainment boss Paul Jackson said: ...
