Time was when an admission of admiration for the music of Deep Purple would have been met by sniggers and sneers.
A series of thoughtful reissues of the band's early 70s back catalogue, coupled with the resurgence of the band following the departure of maverick guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, has however made these pioneers of what became known as heavy metal almost re spectable.
Lead singer Ian Gillan is, however, ambivalent at the band becoming part of the rock establishment.
