There was something heartening about walking past the metropolitan grandeur of St James's Park into the European Parliament's British offices to find it turned into a branch of the West Midlands.
The Euro-sceptics of the region might imagine the office usually full of EU officials with their minds on intricacies of manoeuvrings in Brussels and Strasbourg.
But yesterday the lunch-time talk was firmly on the practicalities of manufacturing, farming, computing, financial services, arts and everything else that happens in the West Midlands.
