ONE hundred years ago motorist Henry Fielding lost control on a hill, hit a tree and became the first person to die in a car crash.

Since then 25 MILLION people have perished on the world's roads.

If the same number were killed in plane crashes there would be universal uproar. The 40,000 annual death rate in the USA alone would be the equivalent of 100 air disasters.

Yet there is little outcry or serious pressure for tightening up safety.
