Charities produce an economic contribution of up to pounds 12 billion each year to the UK economy and contribute some pounds 4.9 billion directly, says a new report by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. But donations from the public fell b y 20 per cent between 1993 and 1996 and the proportion of individual donating fell from 81 per cent in 1993 to 68 per cent in 1996.
