The opening day of South Africa's tour was misleading, but only slightly so. A final total of 287 for four suggests a day of few problems, and that the visitors' batting machine rolled smoothly on. Not so.
Thanks to Gerhardus Liebenberg leading the way with a disciplined 98, Jacques Kallis scoring 75 and Daryll Cullinan an unbeaten 67, Hansie Cronje's men eventually justified their captain's brave decision to bat first under perfect swing-bowling skies.
