The possibility of a rise in UK interest rates combined with fears of a stocks meltdown in the Far East and a weak US performance dragged leading shares lower.
The FTSE-100 Index crumbled a further 24.4 points to 5,948.5 as riots in Indonesia dampened the mood in the City.
Mr Jeremy Batstone, head of research at NatWest Stockbrokers, said: "Indonesia looks like a disaster in the making.
"The big concern is that it could lead to a slowdown ...
