Car wars could break out at the top end of the luxury market if Rolls-Royce becomes part of Volkswagen.
The battle for Rolls-Royce between Volkswagen and BMW led to both manufacturers saying they would enter the rarefied atmosphere of Rolls-Royce style luxury car making if they failed to land the British company.
Mercedes approached Rolls-Royce but did not follow-up its original interest. It is keen to move away from expensive mistakes such as the A class and get involved in the luxury car sector.
