PORT MORESBY, March 24 Asia Pulse - An Australian mining company has claimed to have averted serious environmental damage from a cyanide spill in Papua New Guinea, despite the fact that up to 150kg of the deadly chemical may be seeping into river systems.

Dome Resources said streams showing cyanide traces after the spill had been flushed with neutralising chemicals and it was confident contamination had been contained.

However, the incident has raised new concerns over the operations of Australian mining companies overseas, highlighted in January by the cyanide spill from a part-Australian owned mine in Romania.
