He was elected by little more than one third of the popular vote, he has no practical experience in national government and parliament is dominated by his dedicated foes. But domestically, the future still looks bright for Taiwan's idealistic but shrewd new president, Chen Shui-bian.
Chen, 49, was elected with only 39 percent of the popular vote in Taiwan's presidential election March 18.He squeaked to victory two points ahead of James Soong, who had split from the ruling nationalist Kuomintang party. Vice President Lian Chan, representing the Kuomintang, limped in third with a humiliating 23 percent.
