Article: Queen of Style; HOW DIANA WAS TRANSFORMED FROM SHY NURSERY-MAID TO FASHION ICON Diana's flamboyant style triggered many fashions in the 1980s and 90s, and her dress sense will be long remembered by her fans. ANNE HASTINGS reports.

IT was a huge step. From nursery-maid in a see-through skirt to the world's most fashionable woman.

But there were royal hiccups along the path. It wasn't all plain sailing for the young girl teased on her engagement day by her future husband, who called her his "plumpling love".

Her first lesson in the language of clothes - which she spoke fluently in later years - came in March 1981 when, stepping out on her first public evening appearance, she chose a low-cut black evening gown, a creation of the Emanuels, who were already wor king on her wedding dress.
