IT COMES as no surprise that the Government has refused to assist the Rover car plant at Longbridge, following suggestions that the Chancellor could increase vehicle excise duty on the average family saloon to pounds 250 per year.

This comes on top of reports of John Prescott's desire for city centre congestion charges of pounds 1 per mile, along with urban road pricing at 50p per mile and motorway tolls of between 10p and 25p per mile depending on the time of day, despite fierce opposition from the public.
