TEN years ago Wallace Mercer was the most hated man in Edinburgh - if not Scotland.

His plan to merge his club Hearts with city rivals Hibs registered a 10 on Scottish football's Richter scale in the summer of 1990.

Mercer thought it made sound business sense to take over - and kill - Hibs to create one major club in the capital. He still does, if truth be told.

What the property magnate failed to grasp, however, was the depth of feeling ordinary people have for football in this country.
