Recycled rubber goods maker Durable Corp. has turned to steel-belted tires to ensure the longevity of its rubber product lines.
While the 76-year-old company primarily relies on scrap bias tires as the source of raw materials for its products, Sales Manager Philip Lorcher said, "those tires are becoming harder to find and cost more than they did in the past."
With bias tire supplies beginning to dwindle, in the mid-1980s Durable began searching for replacement materials and last year developed a patented design to use recycled steel-belted tires as feedstocks to manufacture new merchandise, he said.
