THE dodo may be long dead but its ghost is alive and well and bringing prosperity to Mauritius.

The sunshine island in the Indian Ocean is where the dodo, traditionally portrayed as a plump and somewhat stupid turkey-like flightless bird, was hunted to extinction by early Dutch settlers.

That was three centuries ago and this lesson from history has become famous as a symbol of the continuing need for nature conservation.

The dodo is the national bird of Mauritius and you can catch sight of it everywhere - even though it no longer exists.
