MORTENSEN: BALMAIN'S MAN

In 1946, Pierre Balmain opened his couture house in Paris and presented a collection that put a glimmer back into the eyes of the wartorn City of what's new: "The image of the woman wearing couture used to be someone old and rich. Today, younger women are regarding couture with a more positive attitude, seeing that it can be something mothers began looking into their daughters' closets.'

The seriousness that Mortensen describes has given way to a fresher style, one associated with looks now characterized as "young.' He warns, however, "If you sit down to design something "young' it's going to come out looking cute or dollish.' ...
