Open golf hero Barclay Howard told last night how booze almost drove him to suicide.
The Scots star, who won the top amateur prize at Royal Troon, admitted: "There must have been at least a dozen times I wanted to do myself in.
"I spent 10 years in a twilight world.
"Many times I thought of going out to the motor and sticking a hose on the exhaust. I just didn't have the guts.
"Two things saved me - going to Alcoholics Anonymous and meeting my wife Tish. But for them, I'd be dead."
