THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT 2000, sponsored by the National Headquarters' chapter of the National Audubon Society in New York City and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University, has a twofold value for scientists. Scientists learn about the status and health of the U.S. winter bird populations at the start of spring migration, and they also better understand the effects of changing weather and landscape on birds' health and movement patterns.
