USDA's final rule permitting the use of irradiation on single ingredient red meat products was published December 23 in the Federal Register and becomes effective Feb. 22, 2000.
Under USDA's plan, irradiation will be permitted to treat refrigerated or frozen raw meat and meat products. Irradiated products will be required to meet all other food safety requirements, including sanitation and pathogen reduction standards.
USDA will require irradiated meat and meat products to bear the radura international symbol for irradiation and a statement that the product was "treated by irradiation" or "treated with ...
