The nation was yesterday united in grief over Diana's death.
On every street, in every town and village, tears were shed for the People's Princess.
As thousands gathered outside Diana's home at Kensington Palace, the feelings of the mourners were summed up by one floral tribute.
"Born a lady, became a princess, died a saint," it said.
Other inscriptions read: "Princess of hearts: you will live on in all of our hearts," and: "The nation has thrown away a jewel more precious than its whole empire."
