The SDLP's Alban Maginness created history last night when he was elected Lord Mayor of Belfast - the first Roman Catholic and nationalist to hold the post.
With the support of Sinn Fein, Alliance and independent unionist Alan Crowe, he comfortably defeated the DUP's Harry Smith by 26 votes to 22.
Ulster Unionist Jim Rodgers was elected unopposed as deputy Lord Mayor.
Mr Maginness, who described his appointment as "breaking the political mould", admitted that the decision had gone "right up to the wire", as Sinn Fein decided only at the last ...
