French football fans couldn't believe their luck when the local sports paper trumpeted: "Hughes from Manchester joins Strasbourg!"
They had got the wrong end of the stick, though.
The Hughes they were getting was Northern Irish, not Welsh.
And he was actually a little winger instead of a thick-thighed striker. Oh, and he came from the blue side of Manchester - not the trophy winning half.
But by the time he left them three seasons later, the Strasbourg fans loved Michael Hughes like he was one of their own.
