A HUNDRED years ago, gardeners used to write passionately about their greens, which seems pretty odd for anyone who has had to endure school cabbage!
But they were not talking about soggy Savoys. They were praising their evergreen shrubs and trees.
The Victorians managed to turn most people off evergreens with their great clumps of laurels and thickets of rhododendron ponticum, and some pretty lurid rhododendron hybrids.
What it meant was that after a short-lived garish flash of colour in the spring, the garden was plunged into a dark green gloom ...
